Spanish banking group Bbva Launched trading and Bitcoin and ether trading services for retail customers via its mobile application, expanding its regulated digital asset offer across Europe.
Deployment follows a regulatory file to Spain National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) In March 2025 and is now available for all customers of the legal age.
The service allows customers to buy, sell and hold cryptocurrency in the existing digital banking environment of BBVA. BBVA has fully integrated the service into its application and is not based on third-party platforms or guards. Customers are launching transactions independently and the bank does not provide investment advice.
“We want to facilitate that our retail customers in Spain are investing in cryptocurrencies, thanks to a simple and easy-to-access digital solution on their mobile phone,” said Gonzalo RodríguezResponsible for retail banking services for Spain. “Our goal is to support them when they explore digital assets, supported by the force and security of a bank like BBVA.”
The service is designed to comply with Europeans Crypto-active markets (Mica) marketswhich establishes standards for the provision of services linked to crypto between the Member States.
Expansion
BBVA previously launched trading and crypto trading services in Switzerland in 2021 for private banking customers and Turkey in 2023 through its guaranteed subsidiary BBVA. The Spanish launch marks the third market where the bank has introduced its offer of digital assets, as well as the first where it targets retail customers directly on its main market.
“After this launch in Spain, BBVA added another country to its digital asset service, which was introduced for the first time in Switzerland in 2021, followed by Turkey in 2023,” said Francisco Maroto, chief of digital assets. “Mintillating BBVA leadership in digitization and innovation, we continue to develop our digital asset activities, both with new assets (crypto or stablecoins) and with traditional assets in tokenized form (obligations, funds). Our goal is to offer the best investment and transaction solutions to our customers. ”
BBVA uses its own childcare infrastructure for the service, which, according to the bank, allows it to maintain direct control over asset custody. BBVA can also introduce additional crypto assets and tokenized products in the future phases.
