The pirates stole more than $ 2 billion in crypto in the first half of 2025, according to new data from the Crypto Chainysys analysis company, marking the worst year for cryptographic flights.
The blockchain analysis company said Thursday in a new report The fact that the $ 2.17 billion stolen during the first half of 2025 have already exceeded the amount of the lost crypto last year. Not only that, the quantity of cryptocurrency stolen during the first six months of 2025 was approximately 17% higher than the same period in 2022, which was previously the worst year never recorded for the stolen crypto.
A large part of the stolen crypto this year was allocated to a single violation at Crypto Exchange Bybit, which saw North Korean pirates steal more than $ 1.4 billion in crypto, a large laundered part and surrounded in the North Korean regime, according to the FBI.
Chainalysis said that harassment of appeal is a wider scheme of North Korean hacks, which have become “increasingly central to the evasion of the regime’s sanctions”.
North Korea, largely cut off from the outside world and the international banking system, has become a formidable threat in recent years by targeting Western companies to steal cryptocurrency in order to finance its sanctioned nuclear weapons program. North Korea has also relied on thousands of distant IT workers, who infiltrate technological companies to earn a salary, steal intellectual property, then extract companies to pay so as not to publish their sensitive files.
According to a previous chain system, the North Korean pirates were accused of almost two thirds of all cryptographic hacks in 2024.
